BRASELTON, GA (June 1, 2023) – Team TGM will be in Detroit this week for the team’s first-ever street race – doing battle in downtown Detroit in round four of the 2023 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.
For 2023, the Detroit Grand Prix will return to its roots – moving back downtown from Belle Isle for the first time since 1992. The IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge will be one of the major support events for the weekend, which will be headlined by INDYCAR.
The race will also be unique for Team TGM’s Aston Martin squad and its rivals, with only the GS class competing. The slower TCR class will be absent this week but will headline their own round of the championship at Lime Rock Park in July.
“We have different levels of experience racing on street circuits amongst the Team TGM drivers and team members, but for the team as a whole – this will be a new experience,” said team owner and driver Ted Giovans.
“There are challenges that are unique to street racing that we don’t encounter at other types of circuits, from logistics to driving hurdles.
“We’re still learning and adapting to the Aston Martin Vantage GT4, and we feel like we are slowly getting the upper hand. A street course will bring a whole new set of information to our notebook.
“We’ve done our due diligence and as a team, we are as prepared as possible and looking forward to this special opportunity for IMSA to highlight the GS category at this historic event.”

“This will be my first experience racing on a street circuit.
“I expect the biggest challenge as a driver will be the blind turns. On a road course, you usually have some foresight into the corners and even up ahead a distance. However, on street courses, you don’t know what you might come upon around the turn.
“We have spotters, but they can only see selected sections of the course. So it will come down to being very aware and what we can learn on the track walk.”

“Obviously, the Detroit circuit is an unknown for everyone so we will all start from scratch in the first practice on Friday.
“I’ve won on the street course in Canada in the past, so I’m very comfortable racing in this format, and I think we can do really well in Detroit.
“From the circuit layout diagrams, it looks to be a good course for the GS cars but we will learn a great deal in the first practice.”

“It’s been a while, but I have experience with street course racing.
“I’ve raced on multiple street courses in the past, including on Belle Isle here in Detroit. However, there is nobody in this race who has experienced the downtown Detroit circuit, so it’s an even playing field.
“What we learn in the practices and where we qualify will be very important to a good finish on Saturday.”
